East End House has a long tradition of meeting community needs in innovative and meaningful ways. From our beginnings in 1875 serving struggling immigrants to earning national accreditation for Child Care and School Age Programs, our innovative programs are constantly evolving with the community. We need your help to continue our tradition of excellence. Your contributions will help us provide affordable and high quality Child Care and School Age Programs, develop new initiatives for older youth, offer nutritious food to low-income families, and increase services for seniors. We rely on volunteers to help us provide the highest quality services and create the most innovative and relevant programming we can. There are opportunities for individuals, families and groups with varied interests & skills. Currently we are looking for volunteers to help in the following capacities:
Child Care
- Read to a group of preschoolers
- Sing or play an instrument
- Assist teachers with classroom activities

School Age Program
- Run special workshops such as dance, crafts, computers, etc.
- Assist the group leaders with activities
- Help in the homework room

Emergency Food Program
- Help organize and stock groceries
- Assist with Greater Boston Food Bank deliveries
- Hand out groceries in the Food Pantry
- Help out at the Farmer's Market

Community Programs
- Run a workshop in an area of expertise; ie. dance, yoga, etc.
- Teach or assist in adults' computer classes
- Run tax workshops for community members
- Help out at special events

Administration
- Relieve receptionist
- Answer phones
- Data entry
- Assist with mass mailings

Special Projects
- Help sort and hand out food for the Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Giveaway
- Help organize toys for Holiday Toy Drive
- Participate in Community Clean-Up days
- Assist at special events

Mentor a Youth
- Spend at least 4 hours a month with a middle school student

- Homework room volunteers will work anywhere from one to five days a week between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00. The School Age Program serves children ages 4.9-14 from many of the Cambridge Public Schools. The School Age Program prides itself on being able to offer individual academic support in completing homework assignments, improving literacy skills, and maintaining strong connections with the parents and teachers. Homework room volunteers will work with children in a variety of grades in explaining assignments, providing direct support, encouragement, and assist staff in managing the daily operations of the room.
Purpose:
- To aid in the development of the well-being of the children by providing daily enrichment activities and implementing curriculum in order to enhance the child's experience of out of school time.
Working Relationships:
- Volunteers works with the Program and Curriculum directors, Group Leaders, Specialists and Assistant Group Leaders and reports directly to the Program and Curriculum Directors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish and foster positive relationships with children, staff and families
- Assist program staff running the homework support room from 2pm - 4pm
- Engage children in active conflict management and address behavior issues in a positive manner
- Assist children with homework assignments and one on one reading
- Help with set-up and clean-up of the homework room
- Assist with snack set-up/clean-up and general classroom maintenance
- Maintain a safe, healthy environment for children, adhering to proper EEC, NAA, Department of Health and Bureau of Nutrition standards at all times
Requirements:
- Must adhere to the East End House Staff Ground Rules for Working Together as outlined in the East End House Personnel Policy Handbook
- Must be enthusiastic about working with and enriching the lives of school age children
- Must be able to establish positive working relationships with children, staff and families

- Food Pantry Volunteers will assist in greeting consumers, helping consumers fill out forms, stocking food pantry, packing grocery bags, unpacking food deliveries, cleaning the pantry, and taking inventory.
Purpose:
- To maintain a clean and well-stocked food pantry; to provide free groceries to individuals and families who struggle to feed themselves.
Working Relationships:
- Volunteers work with the Director of Community Programs, Community Programs Assistant, and other Emergency Food Program volunteers. Volunteers are also expected to be polite and courteous to all East End House consumers and friends.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the Food Pantry
- Greet consumers and help them with the check-in and sign-up processes
- Relay information regarding pantry rules and regulations to consumers
- Understand and uphold pantry rules and regulations
- Bag groceries for individuals and families who come to the food pantry
- Assist in unloading the food deliveries from Food for Free and the Greater Boston Food Bank
- Keep the pantry stocked and clean, breaking down, tying up, and disposing of all boxes and other waste
- Maintain a safe, healthy environment for all East End House consumers, adhering to proper EEH and Department of Health and Bureau of Nutrition standards at all times
Requirements:
- Must adhere to the East End House Staff Ground Rules for Working Together as outlined in the East End House Personnel Policy Handbook
- Must be friendly and courteous to all East End House consumers and friends
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff and consumers
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and be willing to unload delivery truck, stock pantry, and transport food
- Must be a positive ambassador for East End House in the community
- Must be reliable and on time

- East End House brings fresh produce and canned foods, as well as entertainment, to two low-income housing complexes for seniors and people with disabilities. Volunteers will assist in all aspects of the Farmer's Market, including transporting food, loading and unloading, set-up, bagging and handing out food, break-down and clean-up.
Purpose:
- To provide fresh and non-perishable foods to community members who cannot access the Food Pantry due to specific barriers, including but not limited to age, mobility, disability, and transportation.
Working Relationships:
- Volunteers work with the Director of Community Programs, Community Programs Assistant, and other Emergency Food Program volunteers. Volunteers are also expected to be polite and courteous to all East End House consumers and friends.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in loading food into vehicles, transporting food, and unloading at the site
- Assist in setting up Farmer's Market, unpacking boxes and organizing food
- Greet consumers and help them with the check-in process
- Understand and uphold Farmer's Market rules and regulations
- Bag groceries for consumers
- Assist in breaking down and cleaning up Farmer's Market, including breaking down and tying boxes
- Respect the entertainer of the event and be quiet and attentive during performance
- Maintain a safe, healthy environment for all East End House consumers, adhering to proper EEH and Department of Health and Bureau of Nutrition standards at all times
Requirements:
- Must adhere to the East End House Staff Ground Rules for Working Together as outlined in the East End House Personnel Policy Handbook
- Must be friendly and courteous to all East End House consumers and friends
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff and consumers

- The Mentoring Program at East End House (EEH) matches adult mentors with middle school youth who have been selected by EEH staff over the course of a year. Mentoring takes place in the context of the Middle School After-school Program, however, activities can occur in the community, in the workplace, or in other appropriate locations. Purpose:
- To provide youth with quality adult relationships with caring and supportive adults in order to decrease negative behaviors and to increase engagement, social skills, and self-esteem.
Working Relationships:
- Mentors will work closely with the Program Director and EEH staff in the Middle School After-school Program. Mentors will also form a relationship with their mentee and their mentees' family. Mentors will work with other mentors, particularly in the area of training and development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Commit to a year-long mentoring relationship with a middle school youth
- Meet for at least 4 hours a month with the youth in engaging social activities
- Must be courteous, friendly, and communicative with mentee and his/her family
- Engage in training, orientation, and ongoing workshops and development with the Program Director and other EEH staff
- Maintain a safe, healthy environment for all East End House consumers, adhering to proper EEH and Department of Health and Bureau of Nutrition standards at all times
Requirements:
- Must adhere to the East End House Staff Ground Rules for Working Together as outlined in the East End House Personnel Policy Handbook
- Must be friendly and courteous to all East End House consumers and friends
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff and consumers
- Must be flexible, open-minded, and able to exercise good communication skills
- Must be enthusiastic about working with and enriching the lives of middle school youth
- Must be a positive ambassador for East End House in the community
- Must be committed reliable and on time
