Afternoon Adventure
The School Age Program serves 52 children each day ranging in age from 4.9 to 14 years old. The program is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA). The schedule is designed to be choice-based, so youth can pick the classes and activities that most excite them.
Summer Fun
Summer Fun is a 10 week program that runs all summer long. It is expands program offerings during the school year and offers over 60 classes to choose from each week! Swimming lessons, sports, art and group games are a sampling of activities.
Middle School Programming
The Middle School Program is the result of a collaboration between East End House, the City of Cambridge Department of Human Service Programs, and the Cambridge Public School Department. It is a comprehensive afterschool program serving over 70 middle school youth that utilizes space at the Kennedy/Longfellow School. The program is free of charge to families. The overall philosophy is to offer engaging programming that inspires leadership through youth designed and led initiatives, empowers youth to create their own learning experience through an extensive choice-based schedule, and utilizes the unique talents and interests of the staff to create an environment that allows for free expression of ideas and concerns, provides youth with academic and social supports, and engages students in stimulating activities. Our Staff
The program staff have diverse interests and talents they share with the youth enrolled in the program. For example, a full-time STEM Specialist engages kids in interactive science, technology, engineering and math classes. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified.
Our Philosophy
We believe that afterschool is an exciting and critical time for children. It is a place where they can try new things or explore subjects in more interactive ways than the structure of school allows. We aim to engage children in interactive and enriching activities that will help them reach their academic and social potential.
Our Curriculum
Choice-based Programming
Among the 52 youth that attend the School Age Program each day, there are varied interests and personalities. The goal of choice based programming is to provide a wide variety of classes and activities so youth can choose those that most interest and excite them. Choices range from science and literacy activities to art and sports opportunities. All youth also receive homework help.
Generating and Evaluating New Adventures in Science After School (GENASAS)
This innovative program is an integral part of the School Age and Middle School Programs. GENASAS presents science curriculum in a way that helps youth see science come to life through robotics, dissections, and much more. Partnerships with local biotech companies also gives youth opportunities to hear guest scientists speak and visit labs to see how the concepts they are learning in school are applied in real world settings. The goal is to frame science in a new and more exciting way for youth and to open their mind to the possibility of careers in the field.
Family Engagement Activities
In an effort to engage families in the their child's learning and promote a sense of community, we offer numerous events throughout the year. Past events and activities have included Family Game Nights, Family Movie Nights, and Parent Nights.
